It seems the Golf GTI has finally come of age. - In the new V6 4Motion the GTI has resurfaced with a new formula; but is it capable of rewriting that famous Golf story?

This eagerly awaited 24 Valve, 2.8 Ltr., 204 bhp Golf is the fastest Volkswagen hatchback ever sold in the UK - with 0-62mph in a tad over 7 seconds, it rushes on to a 146mph top speed.

At first glance this new car looks much like its less sporting cousins. Its only visual clues are huge alloy wheels and fat tyres, twin chromed tail pipes pointing rearwards and a subtle badge on the grille. Under the bonnet though it looks more like starwars! - The old Golf had an engine that looked like an engine. A large square of silver and black plastic with V6 decals fill this engine bay - the rest must be under there somewhere?

However from behind the leather trimmed steering wheel everything looks and feels very familiar - you also get plenty of things to play and impress your friends with - a very efficient air conditioning system, a boot mounted multi CD player, rain sensors, an auto dipping rear view mirror, loads of airbags - the list just goes on!

Twist the key and the engine fires immediately, growls briefly then settles to a gentle rhythmic hum. On the road this motors a real beauty, in common with all multi valve engines nothing much happens at low revs, but whisk the needle round to 3500rpm and you feel your back pressing hard into the seat. Because of this cars low weight and that mighty 2.8 Ltr engine the pulling power is very impressive.

The suspension too is controlled and taut, its response to lumps and bumps supple, rarely harsh. I have driven so many cars where your teeth rattle in sync with the road surface - or cause eventual inner ear melt down when you push to the rev limiter. But this hot hatch simply goes where you point it - nose into the apex of a bend press your foot firmly and she just clings on, with little drama there’s no jarring suspension, ferocious wheel spin - you might think I’m being boring here, but you would be missing the point believe me.

This little Volkswagen is as seductive as its ancestors ever where - it has inherited all the usual Golf qualities you would expect then gained some - it’s scintillating to drive and subtle in it’s dress sense - I want one please and blue is fine.
